EA's next Battlefield title appears to be progressing steadily through development, with playtesters reporting a significant shift in the game's internal labeling. According to sources speaking to Insider Gaming, the ongoing “Battlefield Labs” playtests have been rebranded from “Pre-Alpha” to simply “Alpha” following a substantial update to the game.
The change in classification came alongside a large content update that, according to playtesters, included new files and references linked to Battlefield’s upcoming Battle Royale mode. While the mode is not yet playable, its inclusion in the files may suggest internal testing or future plans to incorporate it into the Labs program.
One image shows two squads of four clashing in what looks like an abandoned factory, hinting at a team-based format. Another picture shows soldiers looting weapons from a hidden cache in a wall, while a third features four parachuting players, each with distinct parachute colors, descending near high-rise buildings.
The Battle Royale mode is believed to be in development at Ripple Effect Studios, previously known for their work on Battlefield Portal. According to a previous exclusive from Insider Gaming, the mode is designed to be a free-to-play component of the next Battlefield game—though it remains unclear if those plans are still in place. As the outlet notes, “Fingers crossed, those plans haven’t changed.”
The recent shift from Pre-Alpha to Alpha status suggests development is gaining momentum. “Today’s recent update suggests that the next Battlefield game is trucking along nicely, and an official announcement of the game with a reveal trailer could come soon,” Insider Gaming reported.
Sources also indicate that a full trailer reveal is likely within the next two months, possibly ahead of Gamescom in August. However, there's speculation that EA may opt to unveil the game during Opening Night Live, potentially giving the first look to host Geoff Keighley.
