Well they finally put a name after years.

Todd Howard announced it on 3 November, at the end of a video celebrating 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios.

“Everybody’s always asking about Elder Scrolls 6. And we thought, hey, given the moment, what a perfect time to tell you what The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually called.”

The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.

The teaser has no gameplay: a stretch of desert, an Elder Scroll rising from the sand, a new logo.

What the teaser actually tells you

The lore is Sentinel is a port city and the capital of Hammerfell, the Redguard homeland (as expected), sitting on the Iliac Bay. The setting had been widely assumed and is now confirmed, with The Elder Scrolls Online marking the occasion by boosting XP in the Alik’r Desert.

Another detail is a line of lore text credited to Yazar, Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, dated 4E 206. Skyrim takes place in 4E 201, which places Sentinel roughly five years after it.

That’s the full script. No release window, no platforms, no gameplay.

The timing

Jason Schreier, stated “I think a lot of people forget that The Elder Scrolls VI was only announced in 2018 (along with Starfield) to soften the blow of Fallout 76. ‘Don’t worry, even though we’re making a multiplayer game we’ve got single-player stuff coming too!’ Sorry to say this game is still more than 2 years away.”

That points to 2028 at the earliest, potentially 2029. A decade after announcement, and seventeen or eighteen years after Skyrim.

Earlier this year he put it at “two to three years away, at least,” so the estimate hasn’t moved much. Howard himself told GQ in November 2025 that it was “still a long way off.”

Where development stands

Active development reportedly began in 2023, five years after the announcement. It runs on Creation Engine 3, and internal builds are playable.

Bethesda said in July that Sentinel is the studio’s primary development focus with the majority of its team on it. That was also the month Xbox began cutting 3,200 roles, with reports suggesting the layoffs could affect timelines.
