A cosplayer known online as @squidkid1111, died by suicide last week following persistent online bullying rooted in racism.
According to friends and fellow creators, Ashley had faced ongoing harassment related to her skin tone not matching the fictional characters she portrayed an issue many cosplayers of color say is widespread within the community. Her death has sparked renewed conversations about discrimination, mistreatment, and the lack of protection for marginalized creators in online spaces.
According to her friends, Ashley was celebrated for her detailed and dedicated work, including cosplays from Zenless Zone Zero, Genshin Impact, and other popular titles. Friends described her as passionate, talented, and deeply committed to her craft.
Her passing has prompted calls for greater support for cosplayers of color and for community members to confront racism and harassment when they encounter it.
