EA Sports is officially stepping back onto the college basketball court. In a brief but buzzy social media post, the company confirmed its return to the sport with the tagline: “Bring the Madness. Let’s run it back.”
This marks the first standalone college basketball video game from Electronic Arts since NCAA Basketball 10, which launched in 2009. While fans have long speculated about a return, a recent report from Matt Brown of Extra Points indicates that the new game is targeted for release during the 2028–2029 college basketball season. That timeline aligns with separate reporting from Insider Gaming, citing internal sources familiar with the project.
While the NCAA will be involved as a licensed partner, the new title will not carry the “NCAA Basketball” name, according to Brown. Instead, early documentation suggests the game will launch under the working title “EA Sports College Basketball.”
“The working title mentioned in the paperwork I inspected was ‘EA Sports College Basketball,’” Brown shared, adding that the NCAA is on board with licensing but won’t lend its name to the title.
Conversations within EA Sports and 2K Sports around reviving the college basketball genre had reportedly been heating up as recently as late 2024, with internal teams “pushing heavily” for the project, though the scope of development remained uncertain at the time.
More:EA to Close Origin
The momentum behind EA’s return to college sports gaming was largely fueled by the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) era, which has transformed the collegiate athletics landscape. With student-athletes now able to earn compensation for their likenesses, EA Sports successfully re-launched its College Football franchise in 2024 — an initiative that paved the way for the inclusion of real players in future sports titles. The upcoming College Football 26, due out July 11, continues that trend.
This shift makes it possible for EA’s revived basketball game to feature actual college athletes, with their names, appearances, and attributes represented accurately — a dramatic change from past iterations, where generic player models were used due to legal restrictions.
