In a new interview with Variety, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak confirmed that the Hitman series will continue but fans should not expect Hitman 4 anytime soon. Abrak explained that the studio will not discuss a new mainline game until co-op mode launches for Hitman: World of Assassination, which is still receiving DLC updates.
“Of course there will be more Hitman,” Abrak said. He added that news about a co-op mode will come next year, calling it “a really, really good extension to the universe” that will bring new mechanics and combinations to World of Assassination. After co-op is released, the studio will “be talking about the next Hitman because, of course, there’s going to be a next Hitman.”
The Hitman series began in 2000 with Hitman: Codename 47. It was followed by Hitman 2: Silent Assassin in 2002 and Hitman: Blood Money in 2006, completing the original trilogy. Hitman: Absolution launched in 2012 before IOI introduced the World of Assassination trilogy with Hitman (2016), Hitman 2 (2018), and Hitman 3 (2021).
Right now, IO Interactive is working on three major projects: ongoing support for Hitman: World of Assassination, the upcoming spy game 007 First Light, and a new fantasy title known as Project Fantasy. Abrak described the unannounced project as “a multiplayer fantasy project” that is “extremely ambitious and really cool and is something else than a gun in a suit.”
