Patrick Dane, a veteran gaming and entertainment journalist, has died at the age of 34 following a accident in the United Kingdom over the holiday period.
The incident occurred on December 27, 2025, around 12:45 p.m. GMT on the A31 Alresford bypass in Hampshire, England. According to reports from Hampshire Police, it involved a three-vehicle collision between a Honda Civic, a Chevrolet Captiva, and a Ford Mondeo. Dane, a resident of Chichester, was a passenger in the Honda Civic and was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by emergency services and bystanders providing first aid. Five other individuals were seriously injured in the crash.
Dane had a 13-year career in games journalism, beginning around 2012 with freelance contributions and early roles at outlets such as WhatCulture and GameRant. Over the years, his bylines appeared in numerous publications, including Bleeding Cool (where he also served as Managing Editor and Head Games Writer), Metro, IGN, GamesRadar, Eurogamer, PC Gamer, GamesMaster, International Business Times, GamesTM, and TechRadar.
He later led the gaming vertical at Dexerto, one of the leading gaming news sites, where he managed a large team covering major releases and niche community events. In October 2025, Dane joined This Week in Videogames as Senior News Editor, quickly revitalizing the outlet's news coverage with his energy and deep passion for the industry.
Tributes from colleagues have highlighted his enthusiasm for games, particularly live-service titles like Overwatch and Destiny, as well as his skill as a writer, mentor, and collaborator. Dexerto published a memorial piece describing him as one of the nicest people in the industry, praising his collaborative nature, loyalty, and standout reviews, such as those for Destiny: The Final Shape and Final Fantasy 16.
His family described him as a "stellar presence" in gaming and journalism, noting his sharp wit, intelligence, and unwavering loyalty to friends. They expressed that their loss is "extraordinarily acute" and that life will never be the same.
