Veteran French voice actress Françoise Cadol has taken legal action against game publisher Aspyr, alleging the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence to replicate her voice in the Tomb Raider I-III Remastered compilation—specifically in the updated versions of Tomb Raider IV through VI.
Cadol, renowned for voicing Lara Croft in the French versions of the original Tomb Raider games and for dubbing Angelina Jolie in the film adaptations, claims Aspyr used an AI-generated version of her voice in a recent patch—without her knowledge or consent.
According to Cadol, the controversy came to light thanks to alert fans. Speaking to French newspaper Le Parisien in an interview published on September 10, 2025, she said:
"I call them the guardians of the voices. Very quickly, these buyers of the compilation realized that the voice of Lara Croft, who gives gameplay instructions, was not mine. It caused a real uproar among the community."
The disputed audio allegedly appeared in Patch 2 for the remastered trilogy, which launched on August 14, 2025. The update restored several original lines of dialogue from Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Chronicles, and The Angel of Darkness—but fans immediately noticed discrepancies in the voice performance.
Cadol’s legal counsel, Jonathan Elkaim, a lawyer specializing in intellectual property and artificial intelligence, supports the claim that AI technology was used to synthesize Cadol’s voice.
