Images of a Popplio Pokémon card allegedly bearing the signature of Pope Leo have gone viral online, sparking both disbelief and fascination across social media.
The unusual moment came to light through a post on the r/interestingasfuck subreddit, where Reddit user u/ReptileCake shared the now widely circulated images and recounted the story behind the autograph. According to the post, the event took place during a youth pilgrimage organized for the Jubilee Year—a major celebration in the Catholic calendar.
Thanks to some personal connections, the Redditor claims they were invited to an audience with the Pope. After delivering a speech, Pope Leo reportedly held a meet-and-greet with attendees, during which the fan presented him with a ‘Reverse Holo Popplio’ Pokémon card and asked for his autograph.
To the user’s surprise, the Pope agreed—and seemed to enjoy the moment.
“Pope Leo laughed, probably as a courtesy,” the user recalled, adding that the Pope appeared familiar with Pokémon cards. “He showed the card to the guards around him, poking fun at the obvious word play.”
While the authenticity of the signature remains unverified by official Vatican channels, the Redditor insists it’s real and says the card is not for sale.
“It will just stay put in a sleeve and a one-touch UV slab,” the user wrote, referring to the protective casing often used by collectors to preserve rare cards.
