Jagex revealed it at RuneFest in Birmingham under the working title RS4. There's no final name for the game yet, no platforms announced no monetization model, no release window as well.
The studio's own estimate is the game is still a few years away.
Originally the game started as an expansion for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the Unreal Engine survival spin-off, and it was targeted for 2027. Playtesters pushed for something more like a traditional MMO, and it became this big.
Jesse America, executive producer on Dragonwilds, stated "The team embraced that challenge with a lot of creative ambition and enthusiasm. When we saw the very first prototypes and read the designs that they'd brought together, we realized that the game direction of all of this pointed at a completely different scope. We came to the realization that it essentially would be an MMO, and that it deserved its own game."
The game is set in Gielinor, starting in the Ashenfall region Dragonwilds introduced.
What happens to the 2027 expansion that turned into this isn't clear. Nothing has been cancelled yet.
Jagex announced RS4 as a fourth pillar alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds, all of which will have their own roadmaps and updates.
Whether progress carries over from RuneScape 3 is also an unknown which is the question most likely to decide how the existing playerbase feels about it.
RuneScape Reignited launches 2 December, and Old School RuneScape has what Jagex calls its busiest roadmap to date.
Moving the mainline series off Jagex's proprietary engine is the technical leap here, and Dragonwilds already proved the studio can ship on Unreal. The first public look being CGI rather than in-engine is normal for an announcement this early.
