FX has confirmed that Steve Buscemi will star in its television adaptation of Far Cry, joining previously announced cast members Rob Mac and Lizzy Caplan. It marks the first FX series of Buscemi's career, though he's no stranger to the network's orbit, and the casting continues a steady drip of announcements for a project that has otherwise kept almost everything under wraps since FX picked it up in November 2025.

Details on Buscemi's role, like essentially every other plot specific, remain undisclosed. What's known is that the series will follow an anthology structure mirroring the games, with a new setting, story, and cast each season.

The Fargo Reunion Nobody Mentioned

There's a neat piece of symmetry in this casting that's worth pulling out. Buscemi starred in the Coen brothers' 1996 film Fargo, and he'll now be working under executive producer Noah Hawley, the man who created FX's acclaimed Fargo series inspired by that very film. The two have circled each other for years without this particular collaboration happening, making Far Cry a long-delayed convergence.

Hawley's Approach

Hawley has been clear about why the franchise appealed to him, and it comes down to structure rather than any specific game. "What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is that it's an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme," he said, describing the chance to build "a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens" as a dream come true.

Crucially, FX hasn't indicated the show adapts any single Far Cry title. Hawley has confirmed it will be an original story using the world as a jumping-off point, closer to how Prime Video's Fallout built a new narrative inside established canon than a one-to-one retelling.

Where Production Actually Stands

Beyond the casting, some concrete production detail has emerged that the announcement itself glossed over. The series is gearing up at London's Pinewood Studios, with Hawley directing the first two episodes only and bringing on a co-showrunner given his workload across multiple projects. As of his most recent update, scripts were roughly halfway through the season. Filming is set to begin after Alien: Earth season two wraps, with hard prep starting shortly after that production gets underway, which realistically points toward a 2027 premiere at the earliest.

Rob Mac, best known for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mythic Quest, and Welcome to Wrexham, both stars and executive produces through his More Better Productions banner, and called working with Hawley "a dream realized," adding that Ubisoft had been "remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created." FX president Nick Grad noted the network has now worked with Mac and Hawley across a combined six series and 32 seasons of television.

The show will air on FX and stream on Hulu, with Disney+ handling international distribution. Ubisoft Film & Television is producing alongside FX Productions, with Gerard Guillemot among the executive producers, giving the publisher direct involvement in adapting a franchise that has drawn more than 100 million players since 2004.
