Xbox is making its largest investment in Game Pass to date, according to Chris Charla, head of ID@Xbox. Speaking at Gamescom, Charla revealed that the majority of developers who have featured games on the service are eager to bring future titles to Game Pass. As a result, Xbox has signed deals with over 150 partners to expand the catalog, continuing to engage with hundreds of developers each year to secure new content.
"This year marks our largest investment in Game Pass to date, and we remain focused on delivering the most exciting and diverse catalogue in gaming," Charla said, highlighting the growing demand for the service from both developers and players.
The announcement follows significant changes to Game Pass pricing. In 2024, Microsoft raised the price of Game Pass for new members and implemented further increases for existing subscribers. The company also replaced the Game Pass for Console tier with a new $14.99 Standard tier, which delays first-party game releases by up to 12 months.
These price hikes and changes have sparked criticism, particularly from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which filed a letter in 2024 expressing concerns over "product degradation" and "consumer harm." The FTC linked the pricing changes to Microsoft's 2023 acquisition of Activision Blizzard, arguing that the adjustments contradicted prior statements from the company.
