Eefje Depoortere (born 16 June 1987), known professionally as Sjokz (pronounced "shocks"), is a Belgian television presenter, reporter, and esports host, best known as host of the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) and for hosting multiple League of Legends World Championships.

Early life

Depoortere grew up in Belgium..^[1] She holds a Master's degree in history and journalism and a teaching degree from Ghent University.^[2]

Before her esports career, Depoortere competed as a player in Unreal Tournament 1999, playing at several LAN events and winning ClanBase EuroCups with the Belgian national team.^[3] Her alias, a phonetic spelling of "shocks" in Flemish, refers to her use of the Shock Rifle in the game.^[4]

Career

Early esports work

Depoortere began her esports journey as a freelance journalist producing esports content for SK Gaming and ESFi World.^[5] She became known in the League of Legends community through appearances on esports journalist Travis Gafford's YouTube show Whose League is it Anyway?, and has credited Gafford with helping establish her in esports.^[6] She also hosted Summoner Recap on SK Gaming's YouTube channel, one of the earliest League of Legends-focused shows.^[7]

EU LCS and World Championship hosting (2013–present)

Her profile on WLIA led to her being hired as host of the EU LCS at its inaugural season in 2013.^[8] That year, she hosted the League of Legends World Championship final at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.^[9] She went on to host further World Championship finals in 2015 and 2019, both held in Europe, and the 2020 tournament, held in China but broadcast by Depoortere remotely from Berlin because of the COVID-19 pandemic.^[10]

In late 2014, she left ESL to join Riot Games directly, relocating to Berlin.^[11] In 2018, she moved to a freelance arrangement with Riot while remaining the league's host, a role she has continued through its rebrand to the LEC.^[12] She has also worked BLAST Pro Series events covering Counter-Strike.^[13]

Awards

Depoortere won the Best Esports Host award at The Game Awards in 2018, 2019, and 2020.^[14]
