|content=Lero, has partnered with global gaming hardware leader Logitech to launch a €2.5 million (~£2.15m) research initiative aimed at reshaping the future of gaming technology.

Spanning four years, the project will study 2,000 gamers across all skill levels, from elite esports professionals to casual players, with the goal of collecting deep performance and behavioural data. This large-scale research will underpin the development of next-generation smart peripherals, including AI-enhanced mice, keyboards, headsets, and controllers.

The collaboration officially kicks off at Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Germany, where Lero will begin testing hundreds of participants during the five-day gaming convention.

“Lero are the best in the business at this type of software research, and the outputs from this project will help us design and create new gaming products for augmenting gaming performance – mouse, headsets, keyboards and controllers, for example,” said Niall White, Gaming Innovation Engineer at Logitech, in an online blog post announcing the partnership.

While Lero and Logitech have worked together on various studies since 2016, this marks their most ambitious joint effort to date. The project will use advanced data collection tools, including brain imaging, eye tracking, and biosensors, to better understand how players engage with games in real time.

Professor Mark Campbell, Director of the Esport Science Research Lab at Lero, explained that this project goes far beyond traditional testing methods.

“The information we gather will help enable the development of AI-powered smart gaming peripherals such as mice, keyboards and headsets with biosensors for human performance monitoring in-game,” Campbell said. “And other potential training tools such as bespoke software tests using AI dynamic difficulty adjustments for smarter training and competing.”
