On Monday, the Chinese tech giant acquired an additional 1.11 percent of Kadokawa's shares, raising its total ownership from 6.86 percent to 7.97 percent. Tencent originally purchased a stake in Kadokawa in 2021 for JPY 30 billion. 

Recently, Kadokawa had been in talks with Sony about a potential acquisition, but instead, Sony increased its stake in the company to become its largest shareholder in late 2024.

Tencent’s subsidiary, SixJoy Hong Kong Limited, disclosed the purchase in a large shareholding report submitted to the Kanto Finance Bureau on Monday, according to a Nikkei report. The company acquired the new shares "as part of a capital and business alliance between the submitter and the issuer," the report stated (translated from Japanese).

In 2021, Tencent invested JPY 30 billion in Kadokawa, making it the third-largest shareholder in the Japanese publishing firm.
