content | Text | Game developers are expressing widespread discontent with Unity's recently unveiled policy, known as the Unity Runtime Fee. Under this new pricing structure, developers will be charged a nominal fee each time a player downloads a game built using Unity's game engine. Scheduled to be implemented on January 1, 2024, this policy has faced harsh criticism from developers across various social media platforms since its announcement earlier today. Unity has outlined specific criteria in a blog post to determine which games will be subject to the Unity Runtime Fee: The game must have generated a minimum amount of revenue which is $200,000 of revenue in one year in the past 12 months. The game must have achieved a minimum lifetime install count which is 200,000 lifetime installs. For smaller indie developers using Unity Personal/Unity Plus, the fee will be $0.20 per install once their game surpasses $200,000 in revenue over the last 12 months and achieves 200,000 life-to-date installs. |
