In a major announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft and ASUS have officially revealed the ROG Xbox Ally, a handheld gaming device built in partnership between the tech giants. The long-rumored device was unveiled following weeks of speculation and leaked images hinting at a new ASUS ROG handheld bearing Xbox branding.
The ROG Xbox Ally marks a strategic pivot for Microsoft, which was previously rumored to be developing a first-party handheld gaming console. Instead, the company appears to have chosen a collaborative approach, partnering with ASUS to create what is being called “an Xbox you can hold in your hands,” according to Xbox President Sarah Bond.
Early leaks showed a device resembling ASUS’s existing ROG Ally handheld but featuring a redesigned shell with more controller-like ergonomics and the signature Xbox button. The speculation intensified when Microsoft teased the device shortly after images began circulating online, confirming what some believed to be the rumored Project Keenan — a codename associated with Microsoft’s move away from a first-party handheld in favor of a branded partnership.
Under the hood, the ROG Xbox Ally is equipped with AMD Ryzen hardware and full Xbox integration, offering a portable platform that syncs seamlessly with the Xbox Play Anywhere ecosystem. Gamers will be able to access their digital libraries on the go, continuing gameplay across devices with ease.
Two versions of the handheld will be available:
ROG Xbox Ally: Powered by an AMD Ryzen Z2A processor, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB of storage.
ROG Xbox Ally X: Featuring the more powerful AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip, 24 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage.
The device aims to deliver console-level gaming experiences in a compact form, reflecting Microsoft’s broader strategy of expanding the Xbox ecosystem beyond traditional consoles.
