Firaxis Games, the studio behind Civilization and XCOM, has undergone a round of layoffs, publisher 2K confirmed this week. While the exact number of employees affected has not been publicly disclosed, reports from Game Developer indicate that the cuts likely affect dozens of staff members. Several impacted developers have already taken to LinkedIn to share news of their departures.
The layoffs are part of what 2K described as a studio-wide restructure aimed at increasing “adaptability, collaboration, and creativity.” In a statement provided to Game Developer, a 2K spokesperson acknowledged the job losses, stating:
“There was a staff reduction today at Firaxis Games,” and added that the changes come as the studio “restructures and optimizes” its internal operations.
At this time, neither 2K nor Firaxis has issued a public statement on social media regarding the layoffs, and no further details have been shared about how the studio’s current or future projects—most notably Civilization 7—might be affected. The highly anticipated sequel was officially announced in February and remains the studio's most recent high-profile title.
The decision to cut staff comes despite a strong financial quarter for Firaxis' parent company, Take-Two Interactive. The publisher reported a 16% year-over-year increase in net bookings for the first quarter of its fiscal year, reaching $1.42 billion—well above its forecast range of $1.25 billion to $1.3 billion.
