According to recent reports Nexon and Blizzard are near a deal handing Nexon development rights for StarCraft, citing one senior industry official who says the contract "is on the verge of being finalized."

That official's framing simple once completed, "Nexon will hold the development rights related to the sequel to StarCraft."

Blizzard, Nexon none of them confirmed this.

Rights, not ownership

It is not the IP rights.

Microsoft and Blizzard would keep the IP. Nexon would gain the rights to develop new content in the universe, including a mainline sequel. Western ownership but Korean development.

Nexon wouldn't own StarCraft, it would be licensed to build in it, presumably with Blizzard retaining approval over what gets made.

However, Xbox reportedly holds final say on whether any agreement proceeds.

Why Nexon

The reports state that multiple companies pursued these rights. Nexon is said to have become preferred negotiating partner through its existing Blizzard relationship, having secured exclusive Korean publishing rights for Overwatch earlier this year, which is unique.

StarCraft still ranks in the top ten most-played games in Korean PC bangs, nearly three decades after release, and PC bang share is the key popularity metric in that market. Analysts quoted by Chosun think a sequel built with Korean players in mind would perform strongly domestically, which is true.

The cultural weight goes further than sales suggest, the 1998 original became a national game, spawning the Ongamenet Starleague that ran for 13 years and turned Lim Yo-hwan and Hong Jin-ho into celebrities.

The dormancy

StarCraft II arrived in 2010, with Legacy of the Void concluding the story in 2015 and Nova Covert Ops following in 2016. Remastered came in 2017, but for a decade the IP did not have a single entry.

Sixteen years since the last mainline release, and Blizzard has shown no sign of making another itself. Chosun's framing is that Blizzard won't develop a new game and would rather license the rights out.

Separate reports claim Nexon is already working on a shooter set in the StarCraft universe, possibly for BlizzCon 2026 on 12 to 13 September. Also unconfirmed.

Community reaction has been split, between people relieved the series might move again and people uneasy about a publisher known for live-service monetisation handling it.
