Luigi Mangione, the suspect arrested in connection with the December 4 shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has a surprising background in game development. According to his LinkedIn profile, Mangione interned at Firaxis Games, the studio behind the popular Civilization series. During his time at Firaxis, Mangione worked as a UI Programming Intern on Civilization VI, where he was credited with fixing over 300 UI bugs, representing 25% of the total UI bug count.
Civilization VI is a widely acclaimed turn-based strategy game in which players take control of a civilization and guide it through history, making key decisions on diplomacy, military, culture, and technology. The game is part of the Civilization franchise, known for its complex mechanics and deep strategic gameplay.

In addition to his work at Firaxis, Mangione’s gaming interests appear to be broad and well-established. Reports, including one from the BBC, indicate that he founded a game development club while attending the University of Pennsylvania. This suggests a long-standing passion for gaming and game development, further linking Mangione to the industry beyond his internship at Firaxis.
Mangione was taken into custody on December 9, five days after the shooting, and his connection to the game development world has sparked significant media attention.
