Call of Duty will no longer stick to its old release rhythm. Activision has decided to end the pattern of launching two games from one subseries and then two from another. This is a big shift for one of the biggest video game franchises, and it comes after fans spent years asking for change.
Players have often said the yearly cycle caused burnout and uneven quality. Some also pointed to weaker sales, which many believe showed up clearly in Black Ops 7’s performance. Activision shared the news in an open message to fans and began by admitting it had heard months of frustration.
“Call of Duty has enjoyed long-standing success because of all of you, a passionate community that demands excellence and deserves nothing less. We also know that for some of you, the Franchise has not met your expectations fully,” the message reads.
This will be the last time Activision launches games from the same subseries in back to back years. The pattern started with Modern Warfare 2 in 2022 and continued with Modern Warfare 3 in 2023. After that came Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7.
Activision said Black Ops 7 was meant to be a spiritual successor to Black Ops 2. It described the game as a passion project created by teams working together across the company. Still, the publisher admitted the final release did not connect with players as strongly as it had hoped.
