Electronic Arts has officially cancelled its Black Panther video game and shuttered the game’s developer, Cliffhanger Studios, as part of a broader restructuring effort. The news was first reported by IGN, which obtained an internal memo from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele announcing the decision to staff.
“These decisions are hard,” Miele wrote in the memo, according to IGN. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

Miele cited the move as part of EA's strategy to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” While the exact number of affected employees has not been disclosed, the layoffs are reportedly fewer than the 300 job cuts made by the company in April. Staff across both mobile and central teams are said to be impacted.
EA had announced the Black Panther game in 2023 as part of a three-title partnership with Marvel, which also includes the currently in-development Iron Man game and a yet-to-be-revealed third title. However, details about the Black Panther project remained scarce, with no gameplay footage ever released. The game was expected to be a third-person, single-player experience.
The closure of Cliffhanger Studios comes amid a wave of layoffs in the gaming industry, with nearly 2,300 jobs lost since the start of 2025. With this latest round of cuts, the total is anticipated to rise above 2,500.
