Irish team Entity closed a €5 million seed round, roughly 5.8 million dollars, led by ACT, Delta Partners and Elkstone, with Enterprise Ireland and a group of games industry angels alongside. The platform aims to launch next year.

Their pitch is simple, games running in a browser tab with no download, no install, and no dedicated hardware. Click a link, you're in a multiplayer lobby.

What separates it from cloud gaming is where the work happens. Nothing streams from a remote server, so games execute locally on your device through WebGPU, WebGL and WebAssembly, which removes the round trip and the latency that comes with it. The launch slate is meant to mix PC and console bestsellers with original IP.

Who's building it

The company founded in 2024 by Rich Barnwell, Kev Bergin, Dave McGovern, Fergus Duggan and Artur Stawiarski, the same team behind Digit, the Irish studio that made Star Trek Fleet Command before Scopely acquired it in 2019.

Head of games is Paul Farley, who is the founder of Firestoke, Tag Games and ChiliConnect, acquired by Scopely and Unity respectively.

"The way games are made, discovered, and played in the 'new web' era is fundamentally changing, and these games will need a new home," Barnwell said. "For too long the industry has been shackled by friction-heavy downloads and arbitrary constraints."

His framing for what they're replacing is "console-quality gaming experiences instantly accessible on whatever device they are using," which is a company saying out loud that it wants to make the console optional.

Browser gaming has a long history of promising this and delivering Flash. Whether WebGPU has closed the gap enough to matter is the whole bet, but they seem convincing.
