Epic Games has confirmed that both the Epic Games Store and Fortnite will soon return to iOS devices in Australia, marking a major development in the long-standing legal battle between the company and tech giants Apple and Google.
In a post published on X (formerly Twitter) on August 12, 2025, Epic Games revealed that an Australian Federal Court has ruled in its favor, finding that Apple and Google had used their dominance over app distribution and in-app purchases to stifle market competition.
“An Australian court found that Apple and Google abuse their control over app distribution and in-app payments to limit competition,” Epic stated. “There are 2,000+ pages of findings that we’ll need to dig into to fully understand the details. This is a win for developers and consumers in Australia."
The decision comes nearly five years after Fortnite was removed from Apple’s App Store in 2020, following Epic’s decision to implement its own in-app payment system in defiance of Apple’s policies.
The Federal Court found that the two tech giants had created a marketplace where developers faced reduced competition and were often subject to higher commission fees. In particular, Apple’s policy of restricting native app distribution outside its App Store was highlighted as a key factor in undermining competition.
Judge Jonathan Beach, who presided over the case, stated: “Apple’s centralised in-app system for the purpose of security does not entail that there is not a substantial anticompetitive purpose involved."
However, the ruling was not a full victory for Epic. The judge dismissed accusations that Apple and Google had engaged in “unconscionable conduct” or violated consumer protection laws.
In response to the decision, Apple defended its practices. A company spokesperson told Financial Review: “Apple faces fierce competition in every market where we operate. We continuously invest and innovate to make the App Store the safest place for users to get apps, and a great business opportunity for developers in Australia and around the world.”
