After a five-year absence, Fortnite is once again available on Apple's App Store for iOS devices, marking a major development in the long-running legal dispute between Epic Games and Apple.
The popular battle royale game was delisted in 2020 after Epic Games attempted to bypass Apple’s in-app purchase system, prompting a legal standoff that escalated into a high-profile antitrust case. Now, in a dramatic turn of events, Fortnite has made its comeback, just days after a federal judge pressured Apple to comply with an earlier court ruling.
The breakthrough came after Epic Games filed for an injunction earlier this month, accusing Apple of obstructing its most recent attempt to bring Fortnite back to the platform. Apple had previously instructed Epic’s Swedish division to resubmit the app while excluding access to the U.S. App Store, a move that prompted legal intervention.
On May 1, 2025, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California reinforced its previous decision that Apple must allow third-party payment options and could no longer collect commissions on purchases made outside its App Store. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, overseeing the case, directly challenged Apple’s compliance.
