Finnish gaming studio Social First has announced the acquisition of GamerPay, a real-money marketplace for in-game items, for an undisclosed sum. Despite the change in ownership, GamerPay will continue to operate as usual, with existing accounts and listings unaffected. Social First plans to invest in improving the platform’s features and user experience, further developing the technology that powers GamerPay’s marketplace.
Initially focused on Counter-Strike 2, the platform has ambitions to expand its services to a wider range of games, offering trusted trading solutions and new revenue opportunities for game studios and publishers alike.
In the past, Valve's changes to the CS2 skins trading marketplace caused significant disruption, wiping out nearly $2 billion in market value. However, GamerPay aims to navigate these challenges by maintaining its focus on security and transparency, crucial for ensuring the integrity of digital item trading.
Morten Byskov, co-founder of GamerPay, shared his excitement about the acquisition: "Since day one, GamerPay has been about creating trust and transparency - making it safe and simple to trade digital items of real value. Joining Social First marks an exciting new chapter. They share our belief in building a marketplace that extends beyond just CS2 and aligns with our vision of a fair, player-first economy. Most importantly, they share our values when it comes to caring for players and our community. Together, we can bring that philosophy to even more games and players worldwide."
Byskov also expressed pride in what the small team at GamerPay has accomplished, highlighting his excitement about the platform’s growth under the Social First umbrella.
