Intel has announced plans to implement layoffs starting in Q2 2025 as part of a broader strategy to restructure the company. In a communication to employees following the release of Intel's Q1 2025 financial results, CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirmed that the workforce reduction is necessary to address "organizational complexity" and eliminate "unnecessary bureaucracy."

Tan explained that many teams within the company currently operate with eight or more layers of management, which he believes contributes to inefficiencies and slows down decision-making. “As we refocus on engineering, we will also remove organizational complexity,” Tan stated in the email to staff. “I’m a big believer in the philosophy that the best leaders get the most done with the fewest people. We will embrace this mindset across the company.”

Although the exact number of employees affected by the layoffs remains unspecified, Tan acknowledged that the company would be making “very hard decisions” to position Intel for long-term success. "There is no way around the fact that these critical changes will reduce the size of our workforce," Tan said. "We need to make some very hard decisions to put our company on a solid footing for the future."

This restructuring is being framed as a necessary step to rebuild Intel’s culture and operations around engineering, with an emphasis on reducing management layers and increasing autonomy for top talent. "We must balance our reductions with the need to retain and recruit key talent," Tan noted, adding that he would empower his leadership team to make decisions aligned with Intel's top priorities.
