KT's Explanation
The organisation was upfront that this wasn't a performance benching or a planned rotation, but a response to a locker-room problem. In an official statement, KT said: "There were internal conflicts among the players during practice, which negatively affected the team's synergy. As a result, we made the team-level decision to change the starting AD carry." Beyond that, the club offered no specifics on the nature of the conflict, and it's worth taking the statement at face value rather than reading into who was involved or why, since KT hasn't detailed it.
The timing made it genuinely abrupt. FenRir had been playing bot lane for KT during their KeSPA Cup 2026 campaign, but that run ended in disappointment with an eighth-place finish, eliminated in the first round of the Last Chance Qualifier play-ins after a 0-2 loss to Kiwoom DRX just two days before the T1 match. The KeSPA Cup is traditionally used as a low-stakes environment to bed Challengers players into the main roster, and the plan had been for FenRir to step aside once the Regular Season resumed. The internal conflict upended that plan entirely.
Not Quite a Cold Debut
One detail that softens the "thrown to the wolves" framing: this wasn't actually FenRir's first taste of the LCK. Born in 2006, he made his top-level debut earlier in the second round of the 2026 season against Nongshim RedForce, filling in for Aiming due to a health issue, and KT won that match behind strong showings from Lee "Effort" Sang-ho and Lee "Perfect" Seung-min. So while starting a T1 derby is a monumental step up in pressure, he had at least stood on the LCK stage once before and come away with a win.
His path here has been quick. Now in the third year of his professional career, FenRir came through Dplus KIA Youth in 2024 before catching KT Academy's attention and signing in 2025, where he won an LCK Academy Series title. He was reportedly considered for a senior promotion at the start of the year, but KT opted to wait, until circumstances forced their hand.
The Ghost Swap and What KT Chose
The change arrived alongside a separate, initially confusing piece of news: former starting support Jang "GHOST" Yong-jun was moving to the ADC role. That led many in the KT fanbase to assume Ghost, a player with far more Tier 1 experience, would take the starting bot spot over Aiming. Instead, that role swap appears focused on the KT Academy roster rather than the senior team, with Aiming himself turning out for KT Academy in a recent LCK Challengers loss to Dplus Challengers.
The upshot is a telling decision about KT's priorities. Faced with a choice between promoting a raw Challengers rookie or reshuffling a more experienced player into an unfamiliar role, KT judged that FenRir stepping up was the less disruptive path, betting a settled newcomer would serve team synergy better than a veteran learning a new position. Given the 2-0 win over a struggling T1 side, a team that has looked uncharacteristically disorganised despite their three consecutive Worlds titles, KT will feel thoroughly vindicated for now. Whether FenRir can sustain that level across the remainder of the Rounds 3-4 Legends Group is the real test, but as debuts under pressure go, beating your biggest rivals in the Telecom Wars is about as good a start as a young ADC could ask for.
