HBO has officially renewed The Last of Us for a third season, just days before Season 2 makes its highly anticipated debut on Sunday, April 13. The early renewal signals the network’s strong confidence in the hit series, which continues to earn critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase.

Season 2 is set to partially adapt The Last of Us Part II, the sequel to the 2013 PlayStation game on which the series is based. This season will introduce several key characters from the game, including Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever — a pivotal figure whose storyline plays a major role in the evolving narrative.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Executive Vice President of Programming, previously hinted at a longer roadmap for the show. In a February interview with Deadline, Orsi stated, “We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons. I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done.”

The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. The series premiered in January 2023 and quickly became a breakout success. By the end of its first season, it was averaging 32 million viewers per episode in the United States, making it the most-watched debut season in HBO’s history — surpassing even House of the Dragon.

The Last of Us is based on the critically acclaimed video game series developed by Naughty Dog for PlayStation. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic United States ravaged by a fungal infection that turns people into violent, zombie-like creatures. Players — and now viewers — follow Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl named Ellie across the country. Ellie is believed to be immune to the infection, and she may be the key to humanity’s survival.

The game is widely praised for its emotional storytelling, nuanced characters, and cinematic gameplay, all of which have been faithfully translated into the HBO adaptation. With its grounded tone and gripping drama, the series continues to blur the lines between video game and prestige television storytelling.
