Warner Bros.' A Minecraft Movie, in collaboration with Legendary Pictures, has achieved an impressive milestone with a record-breaking opening weekend. The film grossed $157 million domestically and $144 million overseas, bringing its global total to $301 million in its first few days of release.

The film’s opening surpassed expectations by tens of millions, setting a new record for the biggest debut ever for a video game adaptation. This impressive performance outpaced the $146.4 million three-day opening of Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Bros. Movie over the Easter weekend in 2023. (Mario Bros., which opened on a Wednesday, went on to earn $204 million through Easter Sunday.)

This box office success marks a much-needed win for Warner Bros., providing a boost for studio heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who have faced challenges in recent times. It’s also a significant achievement for Legendary Pictures, where Mary Parent, the studio’s movie chief, has received praise for her role in suggesting director Jared Hess (known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre) for the project.

“We’re absolutely overjoyed A Minecraft Movie has been so warmly received by audiences around the world,” said De Luca and Abdy in a statement. “We want to thank everyone involved, from Jared Hess to the talented cast, as well as Legendary and Vertigo, our producing partners. We also want to extend our gratitude to our marketing and distribution teams. A Minecraft Movie’s decade-long journey to the screen was overseen with great care by WBP’s Jesse Ehrman and his team, and we are thrilled their efforts have resulted in such a tremendous response.”
