NBA Take-Two Media (NBAT2), a collaboration between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Take-Two Interactive Software, has unveiled a reimagined version of the NBA 2K League (2KL). The new format aims to blend competition with culture, creating an interactive entertainment experience that brings together NBA players, creators, and fans of all skill levels.
The 2KL will feature original content with NBA players and creators facing off in a variety of settings, both online and in-person. The league will also introduce a groundbreaking open-ladder competition, allowing fans to compete directly alongside their favorite creators and NBA athletes. This format is designed to break down traditional boundaries and invite wider participation.
“With the new 2KL, we're building an entirely new type of entertainment universe that blends competition with content,” said Andrew Perlmutter, CEO of NBAT2. “Filled with wild, wacky, unpredictable and emotionally resonant moments, we’re extending the immensely popular world of NBA 2K beyond competitive gaming and will show fans who their favorite athletes and creators are off the court.”
As part of the relaunch, NBAT2 has entered a multi-year partnership with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), which will help provide more opportunities for NBA players to participate in the 2KL. This collaboration will also allow the league to create personalized narratives around specific players.
The new 2KL will begin with six teams: Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, Utah Jazz, and Washington Wizards. Each team will feature a mix of NBA players and creators, including Zach 2K, BEARDABEAST, Kofie Yeboah, Gradey Dick, Alex Sarr, and Duncan Robinson. A select number of top-ranked fans, who have excelled in 2K gameplay, will also compete. These teams will face off in a variety of challenges, both in virtual competitions and live events, with moments that highlight the personalities of the players involved.
Jesser, a prominent figure in the NBA 2K community with over 35 million YouTube subscribers, will serve as the Honorary Commissioner of the league. Known for his basketball-centric content and collaborations with athletes, Jesser will guide the league alongside a board of celebrity guests, including Olympic gymnast Suni Lee and UFC fighter Demetrius Johnson. Together, they will help draft players, issue rulings, and keep the competition dynamic.
The inaugural season of the 2KL will kick off with MyPLAYER Mayhem, a reality series that features both creators and NBA players competing in various challenges. The first episode will air on November 5 on the 2K League YouTube channel, with two live-streamed tournaments scheduled for November 8-9 and November 15-16 on Twitch. Ongoing episodes will follow, alongside additional tournaments throughout the season.
