"Xbox is not for sale. We will do whatever it takes to set the company up for success, and we will look at the right partnerships, the right operating model and everything needed to achieve that."
However, The Information reported earlier this year that Microsoft has held some discussions about spinning Xbox off, which can mean several things an outright sale, or converting it into a standalone subsidiary, or a joint venture with another company.
Sharma has ruled out the first option here.
She stated "We've got a long way to go with Microsoft, and we're going to take the long-term view."
Why anyone asked
Since June of 2026 Xbox went through significant changes. 3,200 roles being cut through fiscal 2027, five studios divested, Halo and Rare handed to Activision, Obsidian moved under Bethesda, Playground merged with Turn 10, management layers cut from as many as 14 down to five, and a stated focus on the highest-margin parts of the business.
Satya Nadella stated "There's some amount of streamlining the team is doing, and Asha is doing, which is great to see," he said on the Sources Podcast, reiterating the goal of returning gaming to growth through its biggest games and new business models.
Microsoft executives told the Times there's always speculation about an Xbox sale and it never happens. That's true, and it's also what they'd say either way.
The case for taking her at her word
The reality is Xbox has never fitted inside Microsoft, whose cloud and AI businesses dwarf it even after the 70 billion dollar Activision acquisition. Analysts have predicted this for years.
Project Helix is coming, described as a family of devices. Exclusivity is back as a strategy, with Gears and Clockwork named. The billion-daily-players target is a growth goal, not an exit plan.
