Drama

20 October 2026 07:34

Over 18 and 19 October XBOX employee posted a thread stating that the games industry is lying to itself about AI. The very next morning the account was gone, less than a day after the posts started spreading.

What he said

He stated that he built a rough football game in around three hours using Unreal Engine and MCP tools, with an AI agent testing and iterating as he worked. “I’m telling you I tried it and it’s true, anyone can build a game.”

“Gaming is the only industry pretending to not use AI. Gaming is the only industry slow-walking the transition because users have negative sentiment. Everyone else accepts reality. If you’re a game developer refusing to believe that AI has a place in your future, you should not be in the business of being a business.”

He called five and ten year plans that don’t account for AI “a fake future.”

“My goal is to get this over with so we can move on as a company, despite the fact that some will persecute me for this: we use AI, just as all companies do in 2026.” And: “I’m happy to take the hit if it means hundreds at Xbox can stop pretending that they’re not using AI.”

What that was, and wasn’t

Microsoft did not say anything yet, including the claim about hundreds of Xbox employees using AI tools. His employment status hasn’t been reported either way.

One employee said his colleagues use AI. I mean it is obvious at this point.

The part he was probably right about

The core claim is hard to dismiss. Plenty of studios use AI tooling somewhere in the pipeline and very few say so, because the audience reaction is insane.

His own account deleted within a day is a reasonable demonstration of why.

The main point is in gaming, developers and studios are much more in contact with the players, therefore things blow out of proportion.

Some Context

Asha Sharma came to Xbox from an AI background. Xbox Labs launched recently to pursue emerging technologies. Microsoft has publicly discussed generative AI research including Muse.
