Steam Frame Costs More Than the Headset It Replaces

Steam Frame is coming soon amid global chip shortage.

Reservations open 14th September and close Thursday 17 September at 10am Pacific, with purchase emails going out from 18 September in random order.

Both sets include the headset, Steam Frame Controllers, a wireless adapter for PC streaming, and Half-Life: Alyx. A microSD slot means onboard storage isn't a hard ceiling.

The power supply will cost 29 dollars extra, though any Steam Deck charger or 45W USB-C equivalent works. An Accessories Kit with a top strap, controller hand grips and an extended light blocker runs 59 dollars.

Why it's not cheaper

Ten months ago Valve's stated that their aim was to undercut the 999 dollar Index. So it will cost more than the Steam Machine, which Valve priced at 1,049 after saying DDR5 contract prices had risen more than 170% year on year.

That's the same memory crisis Valve described in July as "still getting worse," with retail lagging bulk supply by three to six months. The Steam Machine's original entry-PC positioning died the same way.

1,059 still sits inside the 899 to 1,199 analyst range tracked over the summer, so this isn't a shock. It's just not the pitch Valve made in November.

What it actually runs

This is the part that separates it from Quest.

Linux and Windows games run locally, SteamVR titles included, using Proton for Windows compatibility and FEX to translate x86 code for the ARM chip. Android games go through a separate layer called Lepton, with developers able to distribute mobile-optimised Android builds through Steam directly.

Valve counts over 100 games as Steam Frame Standalone Verified at launch. The included Alyx is the standalone-capable version.

The USB dongle creates a point-to-point wireless connection to your PC rather than routing through your router.
