The Esports Nations Cup Loses a Year Before It Ever Starts

Everything was not ready apparently.
The Esports Foundation confirmed on 18 August that the inaugural Esports Nations Cup, scheduled for Riyadh in November, postponed to November 2027.
The stated reason is the regional tensions, specifically the Iran-US conflict that already forced the Esports World Cup out of Riyadh and into Paris back in May.
The Foundation's statement points to "ongoing assessment of the wider regional situation, and after consultation with key stakeholders," adding that "given ENC's unprecedented international scale and the uncertainty created by the wider regional situation, EF believes moving the inaugural competition to November 2027 is the responsible decision to provide the certainty and stability that National Teams, publishers, partners and fans expect."
Two and a half months of notice, with most rosters already qualified, it will be interesting how this will develop.

What was lined up
Sixteen titles, including League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2, Valorant and Rocket League. Faker was set to play this year. The money attached was 20 million dollars in prize pool, another 20 million for national team development, and 5 million in incentives, which is substantial.
Boulevard City in Riyadh was the venue. adidas had signed on as Official Kit Partner weeks ago to design Custom jerseys and tracksuits for more than 100 countries and territories, roughly 2,000 athletes and coaches. Faker's ambassadorship, announced in July, runs through 2028 and covers ENC specifically.
What happens to the qualified players
Unclear, which is the sharpest problem with the announcement.
The Foundation says it will work "closely with National Team Partners, publishers and other stakeholders to provide clarity on the revised competition calendar, qualification pathways and other implications of the new timeline." That's an acknowledgement that nobody knows yet whether a 2026 qualification still means anything in 2027.
Fourteen months is a long time in esports. Rosters change, players retire, form collapses. Asking a qualified team to hold its shape for a year and a bit is hard.
Development Fund commitments to National Team Partners remain in place, which at least means the money keeps flowing while the event doesn't happen.
Why this one didn't move
The EWC relocated. The ENC didn't.
The Foundation stated that "Saudi Arabia remains fully capable of hosting events, with major sporting and entertainment events continuing as planned," which reads as a message aimed past the esports audience.
There's a straightforward reading of the difference. The ENC exists partly as a Saudi hosting project. The Foundation is headquartered in Riyadh, chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and funded through the Public Investment Fund. The tournament emerged after the Foundation's Olympic partnership shifted, with the Olympic Esports Games also bound for Riyadh and also pushed to 2027. Holding the inaugural edition somewhere else would have removed most of what the event was for.
No official confirmation of that reasoning has been given.
Reichert's line
"The decision to postpone the Esports Nations Cup was not taken lightly," said Foundation CEO Ralf Reichert. "The response from National Team Partners, publishers, players and communities around the world has shown us how much potential this competition has."
"We owe them an inaugural ENC delivered under the right conditions and at the level this idea deserves. Hosting the tournament in Riyadh next year does not change our commitment. We will continue investing in our National Team Partners, working with publishers and building the national ecosystems already taking shape around the competition."
Riyadh now has both the ENC and the Olympic Esports Games landing in 2027.. hopefully.
