Battlefield team announced that the The Top Gun update will drop on 18 August, free for all who owns the game. It's Phase 2 of Season 4, which according to EA is the biggest seasonal push since launch.

Wake Island is the headline for this update. The Pacific map has been rebuilt for the current engine with carrier-based HQs on the coastlines and a redesigned layout pushing naval combat harder than previous versions. It arrives in Verified Experiences first.

The jets

Two new aircraft, both two-seaters: the F-74A Seacat and the F/A-81F Super Spectre, will be added as well.

Battlefield hasn't featured two-seat jets since Battlefield 2 in 2005.

On top of it existing maps get carriers too. Tsuru Reef, which launched with Phase 1 on 21 July, will receive aircraft carriers that work as mobile spawn points.

Two new modes

Carrier Strike. Both teams try to destroy the enemy carrier. You capture sectors across the island, deploy vehicles, and open lanes for pilots to push deeper. As the carrier takes damage the fight moves inside the hull for a final objective, so it shifts from large-scale vehicle warfare into close-quarters infantry combat.

Gauntlet: Fighter Sweep. A REDSEC mission built around shooting down enemy jets and destroying stockpiles scattered across the map to build your score.

REDSEC's Fort Lyndon battle royale map also gains a point of interest called USS Grant, a crashed carrier carrying better loot than standard POIs. It'll be flagged as a High Value Zone for its first few weeks.

The Top Gun cast

Three characters from the movie Maverick become playable: Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), Lt. Robert "Bob" Floyd (Lewis Pullman), and Adm. Solomon "Warlock" Bates (Charles Parnell).

The collaboration runs with Paramount Games Studio and a promo.

The bit that isn't licensed content

Custom Lobbies and Spectator Mode wil arrive on 18th as well via Battlefield Labs in Live. Both have been requested for a long time.

Custom Lobbies build on Portal, giving players control over how matches are configured, aimed at private sessions, community tournaments and creator events. Spectator Mode adds new ways to follow matches.

There's also the Interdictor, a new sniper rifle, unlockable through the event pass alongside cosmetics.

The free trial catch

A trial week runs 18 to 25 August, and anything unlocked during it carries over if you buy the full game.

Getting in requires downloading REDSEC, the free-to-play battle royale, rather than Battlefield 6 itself. Whether that's a barrier or just an extra step depends on how you feel about installing a separate client to trial a game you might not buy.

Season 4's third phase, Tidal Strike, lands 15 September with a naval-themed collection event.
