Ubisoft has announced the reduction of 45 staff members across two North American studios as part of its third round of redundancies this year. The layoffs affected Ubisoft San Francisco, known for developing XDefiant, and Red Storm Entertainment, which was working on the now-canceled The Division: Heartland live service game.
The decision to cancel The Division: Heartland, announced in May, was driven by Ubisoft’s strategy to refocus resources on "bigger opportunities." At that time, Ubisoft had redirected some staff to XDefiant and ongoing projects such as Rainbow Six. This latest round of layoffs follows a similar reduction of 33 employees at Ubisoft’s Toronto studio in June, part of a broader "targeted realignment."

In April, Ubisoft had already reduced its global publishing teams by 45 workers. The company is currently engaged in high-profile projects including the long-awaited Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake and Splinter Cell. However, as Ubisoft confronts disappointing financial results and seeks its next major success, it has been streamlining operations.
Looking forward, Ubisoft is focusing on expanding its Assassin's Creed franchise, with Assassin's Creed Shadows set in Japan scheduled for release in November and several other titles in development. The company’s ongoing efforts reflect a strategic shift aimed at revitalizing its portfolio and achieving long-term growth.
