The layoffs affected Ubisoft San Francisco, known for developing XDefiant, and Red Storm Entertainment, which was working on the now-canceled The Division: Heartland live service game.

The decision to cancel The Division: Heartland, announced in May, was driven by Ubisoft’s strategy to refocus resources on "bigger opportunities." At that time, Ubisoft had redirected some staff to XDefiant and ongoing projects such as Rainbow Six. This latest round of layoffs follows a similar reduction of 33 employees at Ubisoft’s Toronto studio in June, part of a broader "targeted realignment."
