Riot Games Reveals LEC Rule Change

Riot Games has issued a mid-season rule change to the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC), reintroducing the Head-to-Head Game Score as a key tiebreaker in the Summer Split standings.

The update comes as part of a correction to the official rulebook, with LEC Commissioner Artem Bykov acknowledging the error. “The tiebreaker criteria was mistakenly removed and should’ve been part of the tiebreaker order,” Bykov said, confirming that the oversight has now been rectified.

The reinstated rule could have immediate implications as the newly reformatted 2025 LEC Summer Split advances. With ten teams split into two groups during the initial phase of the competition, standings-based tiebreakers may become crucial in determining who progresses to the next stage.

According to Section 7.5.13 of the updated rulebook, the official order for resolving ties is now as follows:

Winter and Spring Combined Split Placements

Spring Placement

Strength of Victory (SoV) – calculated from the combined record of defeated opponents

Head-to-Head Victory Time

Overall Victory Time

Notably, Riot Games introduces a unique stipulation for teams tied in 5th place. Should a tie remain after applying the above criteria, a single tiebreaker match will be played. In such cases, the outcome is decisive — the losing team will be eliminated from both the Summer Split and LEC playoff contention.

The mid-season amendment arrives during a critical juncture in the competition and could influence the fate of teams battling for playoff spots. While rare, tiebreakers have historically played a pivotal role in LEC outcomes, and the return of the Head-to-Head Game Score ensures a more accurate reflection of team performance in direct matchups.
