Blizzard Entertainment’s Story and Franchise Development (SFD) division has officially unionized, joining nearly 3,000 workers across Microsoft-owned game studios who are now represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA). Microsoft has voluntarily recognized the union, following a strong show of support from SFD team members.
The SFD division plays a crucial role in shaping the storytelling experiences that define Blizzard’s biggest franchises, producing in-house cinematics, animated content, trailers, and in-game cutscenes. With this move, they become the latest creative team at Blizzard to formally organize under the CWA umbrella.
“These workers are setting the standard for animation, cinematics, and storytelling across the video game industry,” said Jason Justice, president of CWA Local 9510. “They create the breathtaking cutscenes, trailers, and other narrative content that fans have come to love across all Blizzard franchises. We are excited to have them join our union family.”
Support for the union came through a combination of union authorization cards and digital sign-ons via an online portal. The process, though internal, culminated in overwhelming support among employees for formal representation.
“For years, Blizzard has been a place where people could build their careers and stay for decades, but that stability’s been fading,” said Bucky Fisk, a principal editor and member of the organizing committee. “After more than a decade working at Blizzard, I’ve seen all the highs and lows.”
Fisk’s remarks point to growing concerns within the studio about long-term job security and workplace conditions, concerns that have become increasingly common across the gaming industry.
“Their decision to organize is another powerful step toward ensuring that every worker at Blizzard and Microsoft has a seat at the table to shape the conditions under which their art is made,” added Justice.
