Netflix has closed its Southern California game studio, known as Team Blue, as part of its efforts to expand into video games. This studio was initially seen as a key player in Netflix's move beyond mobile gaming into big-budget, multi-device projects.
Team Blue had made significant hires in the past two years, including Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny, who joined in late 2022, and Joseph Staten, a former creative lead on Microsoft's Halo franchise, who was brought on in spring 2023 to work on a new AAA multiplatform game.
The studio also recruited art director Rafael Grassetti, previously with Sony Santa Monica, where he directed art for the God of War series.
The closure reflects challenges within Netflix's gaming division as the company re-evaluates its strategy in the competitive gaming market.
