According to The Wall Street Journal Elden Ring movie will cost 200 million dollars before marketing, citing people familiar with the production. A24 hasn’t confirmed the reports yet.
The reported figure was well over 100 million even in April. It has roughly doubled since.
A24’s previous record was Marty Supreme at around 70 million. Before that it was Garland’s own Civil War at about 50 million. Elden Ring is close to triple the old high mark, from a company built on mid-budget arthouse films.
Both sides are copying each other
According to reports, major studios are chasing A24’s playbook. Horror properties with online origins are sparking multimillion-dollar bidding wars, and Universal is backing a big-budget film from the Everything Everywhere All at Once directors, who made their Oscar winner for A24 on almost nothing.
Telluride director stated “They’re a Goldilocks company. Just the right amount of people doing just the right amount of things.”
A24 has all video game IP, IMAX, a 100-day shoot, a nine-figure budget, a partnership with Bandai Namco.
What’s actually being made
Garland writes and directs, reuniting with Kit Connor after Warfare. Tom Burke, Rose Liu and Nick Offerman are among the cast, with Cailee Spaeny reported in talks and Ben Whishaw linked.
Filming ran from April to early August. Release is 3 March 2028 in IMAX, leaving a long post-production runway.
A24 hasn’t said whether it retells the game’s story or tells a new one inside the setting.
The bet
Elden Ring is one of the best selling games, the game sold 30 million copies since February 2022 and keeps finding new players, most recently on Switch 2 with the Tarnished Edition. George R.R. Martin built the world’s backstory, which is another great addition.
Of course this does not mean the movie will be a success but considering the popularity of game movies in recent years it has a good chance.
