New PS4 and PS5 listings for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 have quietly appeared on PlayStation's backend servers, complete with the original release logos, according to a backend-tracking account. Crucially, the listings reportedly don't look like full remasters but rather straightforward ports, more in line with Rockstar's re-release of Red Dead Redemption than a ground-up rebuild. The same tracking suggests the packages include content beyond the single-player campaigns, which would rule out a repeat of the campaign-only approach Activision took with Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered in 2020. None of this is official, and a backend listing is not a launch, but these discoveries have a strong track record of preceding real announcements.
The Breadcrumbs Are Stacking Up
What makes this more than an isolated database blip is how many signals are now pointing the same way. The PlayStation listings follow South Korean ratings board entries for both games, filed with a May 21 receipt date and deliberated on May 29, the kind of regulatory paperwork that typically only happens when a release is genuinely in motion. There's an even subtler tell, too: when Activision recently ran a Steam sale on older Call of Duty titles, Black Ops 1 and 2 were conspicuously absent from the discounts, exactly what you'd expect if the publisher were holding them back ahead of a re-release. Stack the ratings filings, the backend listings, and the Steam omission together, and it starts to look less like coincidence and more like quiet groundwork.
Why a Nintendo Direct Shadowdrop Would Make Sense
The most eye-catching part of the leak is the claim that both titles could shadowdrop during the Nintendo Direct on June 9. A Call of Duty classic dropping during a Nintendo livestream sounds odd on its face, since CoD has almost no history on Nintendo hardware, but the logic clicks into place once you remember Modern Warfare 4 is launching on Switch 2 later this year. Seeding two beloved Black Ops games onto Nintendo's platform ahead of that release would be a clean way to establish a CoD beachhead on Switch 2 and warm up an audience that has never really had the franchise. It's worth being skeptical of the specific timing, though, since it would have been just as logical to reveal these at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, where the MW4 and DMZ news landed, and the fact that they didn't appear there is its own small reason for caution.
The Bigger Picture
If real, a Black Ops 1 and 2 re-release would mark a notable shift in how Activision treats its back catalogue, given the franchise has long been wary that reviving older fan favourites pulls players away from the newest entry. That hesitancy looks more negotiable right now, with Black Ops 7 having landed to a lukewarm reception and MW4 only months away, making goodwill from the community more valuable than usual. There's also the question of whether straight ports would include modern conveniences like crossplay, which players would expect as standard from any 2026 release but which can fall outside the scope of a simpler port project. For now it's all listings and inference, so the sensible position is cautious interest. If the games do drop during the Direct, the next question becomes whether the full packages, campaigns, multiplayer, and the franchise-defining Zombies modes, make the jump intact.
