Sort of a success.

Campaign early access for Call of Duty MW4 opened on 16 October for digital pre-orders. By weekend, Modern Warfare 4 held a Very Positive rating on Steam, around 91% from roughly 2,600 reviews.

Just two months ago, the August beta had 20,636 reviews on its separate store page with 7k positive, 13k negative. Mostly Negative was the score.

The campaign was not available during the beta naturally.

Why you’ll see two different numbers

90% positive ratings is really high for a CoD title best actually.

Steam’s displayed percentage calculation is simply positive reviews divided by total. SteamDB applies a weighted calculation that accounts for sample size, which produces a lower figure when review counts are small.

English-language reviewers, the largest group, sit slightly above the overall figure at around 92%.

The caveat everyone writing about this should include

These reviews cover the single-player campaign and nothing else yet.

Multiplayer will launch on 23 October. DMZ early access opens on the 20th. Neither is playable as of now, which means the thing Call of Duty is actually judged on, is different from its player base.

The reviewers are also a specific group: people who paid for a digital pre-order to play a week early. That’s the most invested slice of the audience, reviewing the part of the game they were most excited about.

What they’re actually praising

The campaign is on the Korean Peninsula with a regional conflict spreading into a global one. Players consistently cite the staging, the voice performances, mission variety and the scale of the cutscenes.

Production director Graham Hagmair responded and stated “Seeing so many amazing comments about the incredible performances of our MW4 cast. A big thank you to our stellar Casting Directors, Emily Schweber and Karan Sadow, who brought together such an extraordinary group of talent.”

The campaign is heavily scripted, straying off the intended path fails missions, and stray rounds hitting civilians do the same. Defensible design for sure, irritating in practice.

Where it sits historically

Against recent entries on Steam, the gap is wide. Black Ops 7 sits at 38.71%, Black Ops 6 at 45.75%, Modern Warfare III at 48.19%, Modern Warfare II at 47.10%.

Black Ops III remains the series high point on the platform at 84.36%.

We will update the article upon the release of multiplayer.
