PUBG on white screen. Netflix announced it on 29 October. Glover will write, direct, produce and star.

Currently there is no plot details and no release date. The reports state it came together after lengthy negotiations, growing out of a first-look partnership between Netflix and Krafton.

Why this hire is less absurd than it sounds

The problem with adapting a battle royale is that there’s nothing to adapt, naturally. A hundred people land on an island and shoot each other to bits. Nothing as a concrete story.

The same issue exiss in other game titles Netflix’s Crazy Taxi film and Chernin’s Finals series, both announced this autumn, and in both cases the answer appears to be inventing something and attaching a familiar name to it.

Airdrops and a shrinking circle sustains a series is a separate question. But Netflix didn’t hire a showrunner known for tight serialised plotting, and that looks deliberate.

Krafton has tried this before

The original plans was announced for a PUBG film and TV series back in 2020.

In July they announced an animated PUBG project with Adi Shankar, producer of Castlevania and Devil May Cry, widely reported at the time as heading to Netflix. That did not happen.

PUBG holds several Guinness World Records and remains one of the most-played games in the world nearly a decade after release, which is why publishers keep returning to it despite having nothing resembling a script.

The Netflix pile

Netfliz is going after game titles: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, Devil May Cry, a live-action Assassin’s Creed series, a Gears of War film, animated Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering and Clash of Clans, an Overcooked competition show, plus the Sega deal covering Crazy Taxi, Sonic and Stranger Than Heaven, and an animated Diablo series with Blizzard.
