Epic Games Launches Fab
Business

Fab, the new unified marketplace from Epic Games, launches today, merging the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab Store, and Quixel. Announced at GDC 2023, this platform consolidates Epic's 3D model and development asset stores, with plans to integrate ArtStation's marketplace next year.
The Fab site offers developers access to a vast range of game assets, including 3D environments, visual effects, music, sound effects, character models, and animations. Users can filter products for Unreal Engine, Unreal Engine for Fortnite, and Unity, with future support planned for Godot and user-generated content for platforms like Roblox and Minecraft.
A real-time 3D viewer allows developers to inspect assets before purchase, and a plug-in for Unreal Engine facilitates direct integration into ongoing projects. While social and community features are currently limited, Epic plans to expand these in the future.
However, the launch has sparked confusion and concern among developers, particularly in the Sketchfab community, regarding the potential loss of over a decade's worth of creations during the migration to Fab. Many discussions on r/Sketchfab highlight the issues with transferring content and the new store's limited features compared to its predecessors.
