Season 9, "The Mystery of Thebes," swaps the usual grind-for-rewards formula for something more unusual: a whodunnit. Apocalypse has been murdered, and Wolverine, Psylocke, and Gambit have all turned up dead alongside him. The Death of Apocalypse event, running from July 10 to August 20, 2026, tasks you with investigating each killing across three standalone cases, solving one to unlock the next. With Wolverine's case already cracked (the culprit there being Bucky), attention now turns to Psylocke.

How the Investigation Works

Each case plays out in two phases. First, you examine an illustrated crime scene by tapping the sparkling points of interest scattered across the gallery card. Each one reveals a snippet of dialogue or description, with key words highlighted and automatically added to your clue inventory. Once you've collected them all, you flip to the deduction page, where you're presented with a block of text full of blanks and three persons of interest to identify. Your job is to slot the gathered clue words into the correct gaps and name the guilty party. The game only tells you if something is wrong, not which specific answer is off, which is exactly why the process can get frustrating.

The Full Solution

For anyone stuck, here's the completed report. Spoilers follow, obviously. The filled-in narrative reads that, not long ago, LOKI had discovered a way to rewrite DESTINY. With the tools of creation already in hand, the killer needed only the right PAINT to achieve his goal, and he believed the BLOOD flowing through PSYLOCKE, which came from her unique WATERCOLOR UNIVERSE, might be the final ingredient. He trailed her to the Lazarus Chamber, trapped her in an ILLUSION while she was off guard, and, to frame MAGIK for the crime, killed her with an arrow imbued with UNDEAD ENERGY. To his dismay, all he obtained was a muted palette that lets the fragments of lost worlds be DRAWN.

For the three Persons of Interest on the deduction page, select Psylocke, Loki, and Magik.

Who Killed Psylocke, and Why

Placing everything correctly unmasks the murderer as Loki, the God of Mischief. Thor's half-brother had figured out how to rewrite destiny but needed one last component to pull it off. Believing Psylocke's blood, drawn from her distinctive watercolour universe, was the fabled "Ink of Destiny," he trapped her within an illusion and killed her with an undead-energy arrow, deliberately framing Magik as the culprit.

His scheme backfired. Rather than the reality-rewriting ink he sought, Psylocke's blood only granted him a muted palette capable of redrawing fragments of already-lost worlds, not bending destiny to his will. When confronted, Loki even offered a half-apology, promising to use the stolen blood to paint an "ink-washed garden" in Psylocke's honour, an offer she coldly marked as "forgiven, but never forgotten."

Your Reward and What's Next

Solving the case earns you the "Butterfly Trap (The Mystery of Thebes #4)" Gallery Card along with some Units. The final case, the Death of Gambit, unlocks on July 16, so there's a short wait before the investigation continues. With Loki now implicated and Bucky already exposed, the pieces are slowly coming together, but the identity of Apocalypse's own killer remains the season's central mystery still to be solved.
