Marvel Rivals is rolling out its Season 8.5 mid-season update on June 12, and the centrepiece is Cyclops, the X-Men leader finally becoming playable after weeks of teasers. He joins as a Duelist, built around his signature optic blasts and a precise, high-impact ranged playstyle, with the ability to unleash heavier optic barrages when a fight demands it. His arrival continues NetEase's steady expansion of the game's X-Men roster and adds another ranged damage dealer to the Duelist pool.

Cyclops Team-Up and the Balance Pass

Cyclops brings a new Team-Up called Blast Slash, pairing him with Wolverine. The ability supercharges Wolverine's claws with kinetic energy, extending his melee range and replacing his Vicious Rampage with Kinetic Claws, a spinning, dashing attack that deals continuous damage to nearby enemies. To make room for it, Wolverine leaves his Primal Flame Team-Up with Phoenix and Black Widow.

The patch also delivers a substantial balance pass across all three roles. Among Duelists, Black Cat, Phoenix, Moon Knight, Star-Lord, and Daredevil all take nerfs to damage, mobility, or utility, while Blade, Human Torch, Elsa Bloodstone, and Namor receive buffs. On the Vanguard side, Devil Dinosaur is toned down through reduced crowd control, bleed, and barrier uptime, while Angela, Magneto, and Rogue gain survivability and ultimate improvements. Among Strategists, Cloak & Dagger, Adam Warlock, and Deadpool get healing buffs, while Ultron is nerfed across drone range, cooldowns, and ultimate charge. The strong Explosive Entanglement Team-Up between Gambit, Magneto, and Rogue is also weakened, with both its damage and healing reduced.

18v18 Mode and New Map

Season 8.5 introduces the game's largest mode to date, 18v18 Bounty Annihilation, which puts 36 players in a single match competing to earn points by eliminating designated bounty targets while holding the battlefield. It launches alongside a new map, K'un-Lun: Shenloong Arena, inspired by the mystical city of K'un-Lun and built specifically to handle the higher player count with expansive combat spaces and multiple engagement zones.

Summer Skins and Delayed Doomsday Events

A new collection of summer-themed skins arrives on June 18, giving several heroes beach-ready looks for the seasonal event. Daily log-ins during the period can earn players up to 2,500 units, enough to claim a legendary skin for free, and the cosmetics have been a major focus of community discussion heading into the patch. Additional store bundles and seasonal cosmetics are expected through the back half of the season.

NetEase has also delayed the next phases of its Pathway to Doomsday roadmap following what it called an evaluation period aimed at improving polish. Phase 2, Avengers: Ultron, now arrives in late July, while Phase 3, Infinity War, has moved to mid-October, with the studio citing the extra development time as a way to launch both with greater quality and stability. Season 8.5 continues the Sins of Alchemax storyline and remains active until Season 9 begins in July.
