Players demand a PvE mode for DMZ.

on Change.org, addressed to Activision and Infinity Ward hundreds of players are asking for a DMZ mode.

The author’s pitch is “Activision, introducing a PvE option could bring new excitement into MW4. It could serve as a bridge for players who prefer a more narrative-focused or cooperative gameplay, potentially increasing sales, engagement, and overall satisfaction within the game’s community.”

Posts across both Reddit and the DMZ and MW4 subreddits are making the same request.

Why this came up now

MW4 has no Spec Ops and no Zombies mode. For the first time in years, the campaign is the only part of a Call of Duty that doesn’t involve fighting other people.

DMZ will drop 20 squads of up to three into an exclusion zone to scavenge and extract. Running into other players is a design aspect of extraction shooters.

One Reddit user stated “Please give players the option to play DMZ without PvP.” Another took on the standard objection directly, noting that the argument against is usually that it defeats the purpose of an extraction shooter, then pointing out Warzone’s Resurgence added respawns to a battle royale.

Both sides have a point

Extraction tension comes substantially from not knowing whether the squad you heard is AI. Remove that and you have a looting game, which some people want and others think is a different genre.

The main point is Escape from Tarkov has PvE, with Prestige added to it this month. ARC Raiders is testing PvE. Marathon, Incursion: Red River and Gray Zone Warfare all offer PvE-leaning experiences. Separating the two populations arguably improves both lobbies.

The name-calling in either direction is doing nothing for anyone’s argument.

The other DMZ complaint

Players can lose hours of progress and the cost of reviving operators, particularly against players camping extraction points, which is the main point of DMZ.

One player’s framing: “I am fully aware that there are some higher-ups at Activision that do not think that there is a market for PvE DMZ mode. There were millions of active players in the DMZ queue; do y’all SERIOUSLY think that ALL of them want PVP only?”
