Well that seals it, MP is dying slowly.

Nikita Buyanov posted the current split:

25% PvP 15% PvP Season 60% PvE

Roughly a week into Season 1 Kord Breach, it was 55% PvP Season, 38% PvE, 7% classic PvP. By 3 September it was 35% Season, 50% PvE, 15% PvP.

The stats confirm that the seasonal mode drew enormous interest, held it for about a month, then shed roughly three-quarters of its share. PvE absorbed the rest and kept climbing.

Why 60% is a genuine first

Buyanov stated earlier “At the start of a wipe, 15-20% of players choose PvE, and 80% go for PvP. However, as the wipe progresses, the player ratio becomes roughly 50/50%.”

His reasoning “Mid and late-wipe are the times when the game stabilizes, and players can start to come up with long-term strategies. This is why the PvE mode reveals its potential and becomes more popular toward the middle and end of the wipe. Tarkov is a PvP game, but many players are afraid of PvP.”

When commenters suggested in September that Nikita dislikes PvE, he replied that he likes it and that a big PvE update was coming. That update did arrive as patch 1.2.0.0 last month, bringing six Prestige levels to PvE Zone, a Gamma container obtainable only through that route, and a rouble store.

The reasons people give

Another point is cheaters, which is consistent with what drove the DMZ petition in Modern Warfare 4 and with Riot’s 296,416 rank manipulation bans.

One commenter’s framing was the most reasonable thing in the thread: that regardless of mode, everyone is still playing the same game.

The mode-splitting question

Part of the community has been arguing for a while that Battlestate is dividing its playerbase across too many options. Counting Arena, there are now four ways to play Tarkov.

These numbers cut both ways on that. Season’s decline from 55% to 15% suggests a mode that peaked and emptied. Or it suggests players sampling something new and returning to what they prefer, which is what you’d want a seasonal mode to do.

Either way, the direction of travel across every extraction shooter this year points the same place. Incursion: Red River and Escape from Duckov launched PvE-first, ARC Raiders is testing it, and Call of Duty players are petitioning for it.
