The French government has formally recognised the creative achievement behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by honouring key members of Sandfall Interactive with knighthoods in the Order of Arts and Letters. The prestigious cultural distinction was awarded during an official ceremony held last week.
In total, 28 members of the development team received the honour from France’s Ministry of Culture, marking a rare and significant moment for the country’s video game industry. The award is traditionally reserved for individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the arts and cultural influence in France.
Sandfall Interactive acknowledged the recognition in a public statement shared on LinkedIn, emphasizing the collective effort behind the project and the community that supported it.
"This distinction honours us, and our deepest thanks go especially to our team who shaped this world and to the millions of players who have brought it to life," the developer wrote. "We hope that our journey will inspire all those who wish to take the plunge and create their own work."
French minister of culture Rachida Dati explained that the decision was made to celebrate what she described as an exceptional collective achievement within a challenging industry climate.
"By its scale, by its impact, by the support of the public as well as the critics, your work Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has established itself as a major moment in the history of French video games," said Dati.
She also highlighted the broader significance of the game’s success at a time when the global video game industry is facing economic pressure and uncertainty.
"At a time when the video game industry is going through a difficult period, your success restores confidence, energy and momentum to an entire sector."
Dati went on to frame the achievement as a turning point in how video games are viewed within French culture and beyond.
"Your success has acted as a catalyst: revealing the place taken by video games as a cultural practice, as an industrial issue, as a lever for influence and soft power, but above all as an art form in its own right."
She concluded by emphasizing the growing universality of gaming as a medium.
"For the French video game industry, your success says something very simple and very important: video games are no longer reserved for a certain age, generation, or social class. They have found their place, naturally, in our cultural lives."
